The first thing about bankruptcy that you have to understand is that not all bankruptcies are made equal. Some bankruptcies involve a large number of assets and others do not. Some are the result of exorbitant credit card debt but others may due to the fact that you want to get rid of your house payments.
Some people believe that bankruptcy will remove all of your debt but in some cases, you are forced to repay the debt back in monthly installments that are affordable. But even in those cases, your debt is significantly reduced from what it was. For example, if you held a total of $100,000 in debt, you may only be responsible for $40,000 of it but be forcced to pay it back in monthly installments.
People believe that declaring for bankruptcy is a bad thing but it does not have to be. Let's say you are paying off all your cards and are perfect. And let's say you are in a mountain of debt. Do you look good to potentially new creditors? Nope. But let's say you declare bankruptcy. That is on your record and makes things look bad but after a couple of years, you can begin to repair your debt. After three years or so, your credit can be back to the high 600s because you will have little to no debt at that point. So declaring bankruptcy can be a good thing for those that need it.
There are exemptions for your home and your car... so you don't have to worry about losing them in bankruptcy.
